Save the Miramichi from invasive smallmouth bass

We need your help to save one of Canada’s great rivers from a biological invasion.

Smallmouth bass were illegally introduced to Miramichi Lake in the headwaters of the Southwest Miramichi River more than 12-years ago. This invasive fish threatens the native ecosystem including species like brook trout and Atlantic salmon. At the moment, smallmouth are concentrated in a small area, but if nothing is done they will spread to most lakes, brooks, and rivers in the watershed.

The North Shore Micmac District Council and partners have engaged leading experts and developed a plan to eradicate smallmouth bass from the Miramichi using rotenone. It is safe, effective, and done regularly throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Federal and provincial governments are conducting a final review our application and will consider public support in their decision.
