On a whim, I accepted an invitation from Capt./Guide Rick Hillard of Weirdwater Charters, situated on the renowned Mosquito Lagoon.

Setting out at 3:00 am, guided by directions on my phone, I embarked on a journey filled with anticipation. Arriving approximately two and a half hours later at an “Old Florida farm,” I encountered a Beavertail Mosquito (skiff) hitched to a pickup truck in the garage. Greeted by Rick with a couple of fist pumps, we wasted no time and headed off.

The ramp was just down the wild, palm-lined dirt road. After launching, we idled over to “Indian Mound fish camp,” where multiple slips were occupied by local guides, evoking memories of legendary guides who had preceded us.

Armed with bait, we set off, navigating what appeared to be a river system. As we slowed down, Capt. Rick took to the poling platform, outlining the plan for the morning and my role in it. The shallow waters were adorned with mangroves and pink spoonbills foraging along the shoreline, creating a sense of being in a truly special place.

Scanning the area for “tailing redfish,” Capt. Rick pointed out a spot with some activity. With his guidance, I executed the technique of casting past and reeling in, then dropping the bait with some slack. The anticipation before each bite felt like an eternity, but when the redfish struck, the exhilarating fight ensued, accompanied by the sound of drag slicing through the air.

After landing the fish and exchanging fist pumps and photos, we wasted no time and found another group of tailing fish, repeating our success. As the morning progressed and the wind picked up, Capt. Rick suggested relocating for trout fishing. Power fishing the shallows, I hooked a small snook, a welcome sight despite the slightly low water temperatures.

Expressing my desire for a Bay Slam, I mentioned needing a trout to complete it. Following Capt. Rick’s lead, we headed to a trout-rich area, and within minutes, I achieved my slam, concluding the trip on a high note.

Overall, Mosquito Lagoon exceeded my expectations, and Capt. Rick Hillard proved himself to be the epitome of a seasoned guide. Despite his youth, his expertise and passion for his craft shone through.

Being out on the water is a true blessing, and sharing that experience with such a knowledgeable and genuine individual amplifies its significance.
