I was in coastal Maine recently and had the opportunity to visit Maine Sport Outfitters. I was welcomed upon entry by an array of premium clothing and outerwear for the entire family. The remaining levels homed a bike shop, kayaks, paddle boards, camping supplies and my favorite part, a fly shop. I’m assuming most people are unaware there is a fly shop in Rockport, Maine.

In the beginning, the shop was small with limited space for fly fishing essentials. I’ve slowly watched it grow over the years and it now covers most of one wing of the upper floor. Some of the industry greats are found in the shop, Sage and Echo Rods, Loon and DR Slick tools, Ross and Abel reels. In addition to a large selection of flies and tying supplies. Everything one would need to catch any fish in the area and beyond.

I was able to speak with Seth, a local guide and fly shop manager for the MSO . He was enthusiastic and quite knowledgable of the local fisheries. He told me the striper population in the area has exploded in the last 15 years and surprised more people aren’t fly fishing this area for them. He said most people are looking for trout, with good reason. There are some great opportunities to fish for brook trout, rainbows and brown trout. I’ve always hit the St George River in Searsmont for browns and brook trout but there are other rivers to explore in the area. I’d hit the fly shop and ask for Seth!
