My wife and I had the opportunity to stay at Weatherby's Lodge for one night, a mini get away from our busy lives of work and kids, so we jumped at the chance to stay in this famous lodge.

Weatherby's Weatherby's

We arrived at 9 a.m. on May 6th and were greeted by Jeff and his daughter. He showed us our cabin. The cabin was very cozy with a wood stove, two beds, cooler and bathroom. There was just enough light coming in to show the details of the room. It was very inviting and quiet, which is always a good thing for tired parents like us. We quickly unpacked and headed for the famous Grand Lake Stream to catch some land lock salmon. My wife doesn't get the opportunity to fish very often so this was a real treat.

Jen Fishing Fishing Spot

As we approached Hatchery Pool we could see suckers by the big rock and we could also see the river was very low. If you looked closely you could pick salmon out amongst the suckers but it didn't matter to my wife, she could see fish in this crystal clear river. She spent the next hour or so just casting to the fish she could see, amazed at how clear the water was and how peaceful the river was.

Kevin with a Catch Fish

I only hooked one salmon and one sucker out of here. We headed down river and only saw a few other people in the popular spots. So we figured we would go exploring and it paid off. Most of the river was only ankle deep but we found a run that was waist deep and ten feet long. First cast produced a small salmon. My wife had 4 fish on here but broke them all off. She was nymphing and this is a real feet because most experienced nymphers have trouble hooking fish. I think I pulled 10 salmon out of this hole. We caught most fish on a #22 brassie, which my wife was amazed would hook a fish of any size.

After some more exploring we headed back to Weatherby's Lodge where my wife took a well deserved nap before dinner. I went looking around the grounds and at the other cabins. I was very impressed with Jeff and his wife as they were both busy preparing for the evening. Jeff was filling every cabin with fire wood and ice for the coolers. His wife Beth was making home made rolls, desserts and preparing dinner for the guests. After chatting with Jeff a while, it was time to get ready for dinner.

Lodge Inside Lodge

My wife and I headed over to the lodge where we were greeted by an offer for a glass of wine in the lounge. Of course, far be it from us to refuse happy hour! We relaxed in the lounge soaking in the history of the place and looking at the pictures and books around us. Jeff came and joined us for a little bit then it was time to be seated for dinner.

A fabulous home cooked dinner was just what we needed and just what we got. Wonderful, friendly service by Beth and good company by other anglers made for a memorable evening. We had an excellent meal and Jeff and his wife were an absolute delight. With a full day of fishing behind us and full bellies, we went to bed.

I gently woke my wife at 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, May 7th. I was heading to go fish grand Lake Stream for a couple of hours. I wanted to see if she wanted to go or stay in the cabin with a fire. Her choice was a nice fire and she slept until 7 a.m. when I returned. We had breakfast and chatted with Jeff one last time before heading for home.

It was the perfect getaway! We can't wait to return to Weatherby's Lodge as we now consider this an annual opportunity at peace and serenity.
