Fly Fishing Only is located in Fairfield, Maine. Fairfield is about 45 miles south of Bangor, 20 miles north of Augusta or 90 miles north of Portland. The shop is located next to the Kennebec River and within one mile of both I-95 exit 35 and I-95 exit 36. When you leave the Interstate head downhill from the exit ramp - it doesn't matter if you are headed north or south. Head downhill and look for the log cabin next to the river.

I have known Mike, Linda and their dog, Jameson for a while now. They are an Orvis only dealer, the only one in the state. Their store is a beautiful log cabin on the bank of the Kennebec River in Fairfield. They have a dock right on the river so you can try out as many rods as you like.
There are reels, vices, wading jackets positioned before you as you enter. There is an entire wall of Orvis rods. They have a huge selection of flies, videos, waders, and there are float tubes and pontoon boats hanging on the wall. Almost anything you see in an Orvis fly fishing catalog, you will find in their store.
Beyond having a beautiful shop, Mike can answer pretty much any question you have. He will take the time to show you how to tie that tough fly or tie that knot you've been having trouble with.
When I walk through their door, no matter how busy they are, they greet me. Most visits, Jameson will come running up with a ball in his mouth and my son Tait will throw the ball to him while I am looking around. It's nice that they are a kid friendly shop.
Because they are such nice people, I find myself stopping in when in the area just to talk. Through the years they have become friends to me, not just business owners.
Who They Are:
My name is Mike Holt and along with Linda Clark and our dog Jameson I own and operate an Orvis, Full Dealer shop in Fairfield, Maine. Linda and I aren't exactly sure how all this came about. We tell people the shop is a hobby that got out of hand.
What we are sure about is that we are happy to be located on the banks of the Kennebec River just below the Shawmut dam. Both of us can remember growing up here and not being allowed to go near the river as kids. Now kids swim and fish in the river all summer long.
In 1982 we opened our fly shop in the back room of our house. We kept the shop open nights and weekend or as we used to say "if we're home were open." Since then we have grown as opportunity allowed and in 1995 I quit my day job and we opened the shop full time. It may not have been the smartest decision to make from an economic standpoint but we like what we do and are happy being shop owners.
The fishing around the shop is great and the people we meet help make the decision to open full-time a good one. Come and join us and fellow fly-fishers in our enjoyment of the Kennebec River and all it has to offer.
